An Arts & Sports City

Rarely is the overlap of art and sports more evident and impactful than Damon Davis’ Pillars of the Valley. A striking, significant public art exhibit at CITYPARK, stadium to St. Louis’ MLS expansion team, the monument remembers the community that used to call the site home.

This powerful work honors and recognizes the 20,000 predominantly Black residents who were displaced from the once thriving Mill Creek Valley neighborhood in the name of urban renewal in the 1950s, along with 5,000 homes, businesses, schools and churches. Today, the only surviving building is on the campus of Harris-Stowe State University, one of two Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) in Missouri.

Part of the Brickline Greenway, Davis’ work will extend along Market Street to Harris-Stowe State University in the future. Find more info at www.BricklineGreenway.org/MillCreek.
