The Grove, a thriving and eclectic district nestled along Manchester Avenue between Kingshighway and Vandeventer, has been recognized by the Missouri Arts Council as a Creative Arts District. This designation solidifies The Grove’s standing as a vibrant hub of creativity, community and artistic expression within St. Louis.
Originally known as the Manchester Strip in the late 19th century, The Grove has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a bustling commercial district to a dynamic cultural epicenter. The Grove embodies the spirit of collaboration and creativity, making it a natural fit for designation as a Missouri Arts Council district. This recognition underscores The Grove’s commitment to fostering artistic vibrancy, cultural diversity and community engagement.
“It has been a long time coming for this district to achieve that and it shows that this isn’t just a collection of bars and drag shows, this is a serious neighborhood-based artists community where people live and the arts are prevalent in all forms, from the performing arts to fine arts to makers,” said Abdul-Kaba Abdullah, Executive Director at Park Central Development.
Comprising over 50 businesses offering an array of dining, entertainment, shopping and cultural experiences, The Grove is a testament to the power of grassroots revitalization efforts. In 2009, The Grove Community Improvement District (CID) was established to further support local businesses, enhance neighborhood aesthetics and promote safety initiatives.
From daytime excursions featuring community events and bar games to lively evenings filled with dining, live music and nightlife, The Grove offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for residents and visitors alike. One of its most notable features is the extensive collection of over 60 artistic assets of street art and murals, and an additional 50 murals inside of businesses which adorn the neighborhood, infusing it with unmistakable artistic energy. The Grove is also home to three art studios and five performance art venues.
